Current, target, final weight
Weight is the share of the course the final is worth — 20 means the exam is 20% of the grade, not a 20-point quiz.
Optional target
Common US percent cutoffs. Type your own target if the syllabus uses a different scale.

What if I score 70, 80, 90, or 100?
Course grade if the final lands on each of those scores. Uses your current grade and the final’s weight — the target is only a highlight.

This is weighted-average arithmetic for one course and one final. It is not a GPA calculator and not your school’s grading policy. It does not apply curves, dropped scores, extra credit, plus/minus cutoffs, attendance, or pass/fail. Confirm the weights on the syllabus.
The exam, not the GPA
Finals week is one weighted average, not a term GPA. The work already in
is (100 − weight)% of the course. The final exam fills the rest.
Solve for the exam score that lands the course on your target.
needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) / w course = current × (1 − w) + final × w w = final weight as a fraction (20% → 0.20)
Example: current 85, want 90, final 20% → need 110% — impossible on a 100-point exam (even a 100 only gets the course to 88). Example: current 80, want 85, final 25% → need 100% on the final.
FAQ
What grade do I need on my final?
That’s the only question this page answers. Type the grade you have now, the course grade you want, and how much the final exam is worth. It solves one weighted average and prints the exam score. Sitting at 80, want 85, final 25% → you need 100% on the exam. Sitting at 85, want 90, final 20% → you would need 110%, which a 100-point final cannot do. Other classes and term GPA are out of scope.
How does a weighted final work?
Weight is the share of the course, not the points on the test. A 20 in that box means the exam is 20% of the grade; the work already in is the other 80%. Course grade = current × (1 − w) + exam × w. The what-if table uses that same mix for 70, 80, 90, and 100 on the exam so you can see the landing grade even if you miss the target.
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
Then that target is impossible on a 100-point exam. Extra credit, if any, is not modeled here. Example: 85 now, want 90, final 20% → you would need 110%. A perfect 100 only lands the course at 88. Lower the target, or check that you typed the real weight from the syllabus — a 40% final can still move the needle when a 20% final cannot.
Do the A, B, and C chips match my syllabus?
No. They fill 90, 80, and 70 — a common US percent scale. Plus/minus cutoffs, 10-point vs 7-point scales, and rounding live on the syllabus. Tap a chip to set the target, or type the percent your instructor actually uses.
Is this a GPA calculator?
No. One course, one final exam, one weighted average. It does not convert letters across classes, apply credit hours, or compute a term or cumulative GPA. Searchers mix those up. This page does not.
Is this my school’s grading policy?
No. Arithmetic only. No curve, no dropped lowest score, no extra credit, no attendance, no pass/fail, no rounding rule. Confirm the weights on the syllabus. The page will not argue with your registrar.
