How the boxes are counted
Room area is length × width in feet. Multiply by (1 + waste). Divide by the square feet in one box, then round up — you cannot buy a fraction of a carton.
A 12×12 tile is 1 square foot. A 12×24 tile is 2. Porcelain, LVP, and a generic box use the coverage printed on the carton. Leftover is extra square feet sitting in the last box.

Example: 10 ft × 10 ft with 10% waste is 110 sq ft. 12×12 tile in boxes of 10 (10 sq ft per box) is 11 boxes. LVP at 20 sq ft per box is 6 boxes, with 10 sq ft leftover.

How many boxes of tile for a 10×10 room?
100 square feet of room, 110 with a 10% waste factor. 12×12 tile is 1 sq ft each — 110 tiles. Boxes of 10 tiles: 11 boxes. Change the carton count above if yours differs.
How many boxes of LVP do I need?
Same room, same 10% waste, 20 sq ft per box: 6 boxes, about 10 sq ft leftover. LVP often uses 5% waste on a straight lay (105 sq ft → still 6 boxes at 20 sq ft). Read coverage off the vinyl carton.
What waste factor should I use?
Tile: 10% for a rectangle, 15% for a diagonal or a busy pattern. LVP: 5% straight, 10% if the room jogs or you run a diagonal. 5% on tile is tight. This tool does not pick a layout.
Is this a materials takeoff?
No. Quantity math only. Not a takeoff, not install advice, not a grout spec. Confirm with the store and whoever sets the floor.
